A long time ago I had something called a PirateBox. It was a tool that installed a modified version of OpenWRT onto a portable MR3020 router, to create a self-contained hosting solution (forum + directory of software and movies). I would take it on planes when traveling. Eventually the project shut down, primarily because browsers became less trusting of unsecured pages, and because mobile devices began to treat HTTP pages on non-internet-connected networks as “landing spots”, and it became harder to stay connected to such networks without a “sign-in” page.

That said I would like to revitalize this project somehow, because there will definitely be a need for a portable internet. Storage is now cheap enough that a lot of stuff can be put onto a small USB or microSD card, or even an external SSD. Ideally, it would include Mobilizon, Internet in a Box, and potential fediverse components.
